Our September Meeting

Our September meeting featured the speaker Brenda Scarman whose was talk much enjoyed. She told members about her stitching experience from City and Guilds, her teaching, and how embroidering helped her through a health problem. She actually taught on cruise ships.  Quite a treat to be a passenger on one of those. Do take a look at her beautiful and varied work on her website brendascarmanembroidery.co.uk.

During the morning our popular stitch club continued, led by Barbara and Jill. We were pleased to present Sally with a bouquet of glorious sunflowers. Very appropriate for such a sunny disposition. Sally was our extremely efficient librarian when we were an EG group and met in the Folk Hall where we had storage. When we moved to our new venue in Haxby she heroically brought books to and fro until this became unviable. Sally also promoted our exhibition on social media to great effect. She is a much valued YES member.

At this meeting members voted for the winner of our annual competition for a piece of work from an original design. What excellent work was entered! So many different techniques and materials but in the end Eileen’s  stunning stitched  cityscape was the winner. This particular piece had also been admired at the exhibition.

Another winner was committee member Annie.  Celia had very generously donated a framed embroidery to be raffled for YES funds. This was a framed piece of  ecclesiastical gold work, one of the many such pieces Celia has rescued and preserved over the years.

As if all this wasn’t enough the next round of the postcard project was launched by Chris B. This time the theme is wings. Once again lots of scope for creative interpretation and a variety of stitch techniques.

And of course alongside all the above our members simply enjoyed being together.

Next month the AGM will be enlivened by a presentation from The Dollybirds. Or should I say performance?
