Remembering Liz Farmery

 Liz Farmery

27/5/58 – 18/7/26

Liz Farmery, member and treasurer of YES, and committee member for YHEG, died on 18/7/26 from cancer. Her diagnosis was sudden, and her illness short. We are all feeling shocked and bereft that she left us so suddenly.

Liz was a founding committee member of YES, being treasurer at the time of the transition from the Embroiderers Guild, and continuing in that role. She was instrumental in the setting up of the new group, and remained a central figure both behind the scenes and at every meeting. Not only did she man the door and deal with all the cash, over the last few years she ran three stitch clubs, sharing her skills and love of different textile arts. She was latterly also a member of the YHEG committee.

Liz studied Economics at Lancaster and York Universities and later went on to complete an OU degree in Maths in the late eighties and early nineties when her children were small. She had worked for a while in banking and in IT at Rowntree’s, then later as a Teaching Assistant in a Junior School, spending some of her time helping specifically with maths.

After retiring in 2013 Liz was able to devote more time to many creative activities – mostly textile related, but also other things, such as stained glass. She loved exploring new techniques and developing her skills, signing up for City and Guilds modules with the School of Stitched Textiles, and becoming a contributor to Untangled Threads. She enjoyed freehand and machine stitching techniques, wet felting, knitting, crochet and so much more. She was never without a pair of socks on the go. Recently she has been exploring natural dyeing techniques, and has been experimenting with woad and Japanese indigo. She was a keen dressmaker.

Personally, I will miss her immensely as a close friend and playmate, and also as we prepare for YES meetings, that reassuring and calm voice in my ear, saying.. “have you remembered…?”

Liz leaves her husband John, sons Rob and Sam, and grandson Archie.
