Our October Meeting

Our October meeting took place in our usual venue, Haxby Memorial Hall, near York.  The focus of the morning session was on starting (or making progress with) the white doves which will feature on the Christmas Tree that we are 'hosting' in York Minster's Christmas Tree Festival.  Every member that wanted to participate has been given a kit and pattern but the decorative elements are individual.  Without giving too many spoilers we are intending to make good use of our embroidery skills so watch this space!

Travelling Book
This month Margaret had contributed to our 'travelling book' with some pages on collage and stitch.  Margaret's speciality is bookmaking so her use of different papers and techniques is really fascinating.   We are delighted that she will be running a workshop on this topic for us soon.

Display of Work by Liz Farmery
Over her lifetime Liz had tried (and become skilled in) a wide range of embroidery, knitting and other related crafts (including lace, 3d stitched art, toymaking, patchwork and quilting).  Although her family had kept much of this, she was also generous in giving her work to appreciative others.  We were delighted to be able to bring together and display a selection of her work, much of which had not been seen by members before.  We really enjoyed seeing the variety of lovely work she had done.

York Embroiderers and Stitchers AGM
After a break for lunch we held our Annual General Meeting.  We are quite an informal group but we like to keep our finances in order and ensure everything runs smoothly.  We have a small committee that reports back to the group regularly and at the time of the AGM we take decisions that affect all our members.  The AGM is also an opportunity to thank eveyone who is actively involved in keeping the group running.  After we had run though the 'official business' of the Chair's report, the Finance report and other practical issues we were able to enjoy the refreshments (tea, coffee, cakes and scones).

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday 7th November.  The morning session will start at 10.30am and we typically finish by 3.30pm.  The speaker for the afternoon session usually starts at 1.30pm. If you have an interest in textiles please drop in.  There is free parking behind the hall.  Our members have a wide range of skills and knowledge that they are happy to share so if you have something you need help with or if you just want to make new friends whilst you stitch, embroider (or knit) do join us.
